Design Do's and Don'ts

A Few Rules of the Road for Designing Websites:
  1. Know your target audience, your purpose. Tailor your site to your target audience, stay true to your purpose.
  2. Simple is GOOD! No one likes clutter.
  3. Navigation should be simple and consistent - don't make your visitors think.
  4. Color choice is critical!
  5. Your home page must be "sticky".
  6. Content, content, content.
  7. Errors make a very bad first impression - proofread, proofread and then have someone else proofread!
  8. Readability is vital - be careful of busy backgrounds, too much shimmering text, etc.
  9. Scrolling is annoying - no more than two (2) screens down - always provide a top link at the bottom of the page.
  10. Test out your site with several of your peers. Get their "unbiased" feedback. Take constructive criticism as an opportunity to learn and improve your site.
